Contemporary Mantua

On a Mantua street looking east toward the Schuylkill River. Mantua’s black population increased from 45.7% in 1940 to 78.2% in 1950, to 94.7 percent (of 16,886 residents) in 1960. Between 1950 and 1960, the neighborhood experienced an dramatic outmigration of whites, from 4,208 to 862.
