Empty Spaces of Urban Renewal

The Science Center’s ballyhooed World Forum for Science & Human Affairs was planned to occupy these two large lots west of 36th St. between Market & Filbert. The project never left the drawing board. The vacant lot in the foreground would serve as a surface parking lot for 40 years. A corner of University City High School appears at right in the photo. Throughout its history, the school’s view across Filbert St. was the fenced parking lot.
